Marathon Training 2018: The Essential List of Bag Balm Uses image

You’re probably reading this because in the next 3-6 months, you intend to find yourself at the finish line of a marathon. Awesome! 

And, that has you looking for the best training ideas.

Your training runs are more than slipping out the front door to clock a few miles. You probably already know the cardinal rule of marathons: Never try anything new on race day. Which is why you want to start using race-day essentials during training.

Here are a few standard recommendations:

  1. Protect your eyes. Wear sunglasses. Best to choose a nonslip, anti-fog pair;
  2. Be ready to “go.” Carry some toilet paper with you. Just a few feet will do;
  3. Don’t let a scrape slow you down. It’s a good idea to bring a few bandaids; and;
  4. Keep sweaty hair off your face. if you have long hair, a spare hair tie/headband is worth its weight.

You may be thinking, “Okay, all that makes sense. But why should I add Bag Balm to my list of essential marathon training items?”

Here are four ways Bag Balm can help you get to the finish line:

  1. Prevent Blisters – You’ll break your shoes in, of course, and you’ll invest in a good pair of moisture-wicking socks. However, that doesn’t guarantee blister-free feet. Blisters form when moisture and friction are present. Chances are pretty good this will be the case. Apply Bag Balm to your feet to create a barrier. Some athletes prefer to use Bag Balm as a lubricant between the sock and the shoe. Play around and see what works for you.
  2. Prevent Chafing – On long runs your skin may become irritated where it makes contact with seams or rubs against another part of your body. Training should include wearing your race-day clothes.   3. Protect from Cold and Moisturize – Take care of your face. If training in very cold and/or windy temps, your face and lips may become chapped or windburned. Bag Balm can help prevent chapping, and moisturize your skin. Rub some onto your cheeks. Even on lips, it lasts a long time. No need to re-apply mid-run. (Do note, however, Bag Balm will not protect you from sunburn. We recommend sunscreen!)
  4. Take Care of your Canine Training Partner – If you’re a dog owner, we bet you’ll take the dog along. (There are many great reasons to!) Pavement can be harsh on paw pads. In cold weather, Bag Balm can protect paws from cold and road salt. We recommend you inspect your dog’s paws and clean them after a run.
